The duo is expected to perform classical masterpieces by some maestros

World-renowned Taiwanese musician Lina Yeh and her husband Rolf-Peter Wille were invited by the Vatican to perform a piano duo at the 25th founding anniversary celebrations of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers on Feb. 10, according to the Central News Agency.

Taiwan's ambassador to the Holy See, Larry Wang yesterday said the council's chairperson Zygmunt Zimowski asked him to invite Wille and Yeh as guest performers at the event.

This will be the first time for Taiwanese musicians to perform in Vatican City and the invitation underlined the Holy See's recognition of distinguished musicians from Taiwan, Wang told the CNA.

The duo is expected to perform classical masterpieces by some maestros such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Edvard Grieg and Francis Poulenc. Yeh also plans to play pieces adopted by a renowned Taiwanese composer Chen Yang, music director of the 2009 Taipei Deaflympics.

Yeh, born in the southern Taiwan county of Kaohsiung, was considered a child prodigy. She studied music at the Mozart Academy in Salzburg, Austria, and then learned from world-class masters including Hans Leygraf, Kurt Leimer and Jacob Lateiner.

German-born Wille came to Taiwan at the age of 23 to teach music shortly after graduation from Staatlich Hochschule Fur Musik Hannover. He obtained his doctorate degree in piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music, New York.

Over the past three decades, the couple has traveled to Europe, South Africa, North America, Russia and Latin America on their overseas tours of duo performances which have received rave reviews from local critics.

The Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers will host a three-day event Feb. 9-11 to mark its 25th founding anniversary.
