The main lanterns at Cihui Temple were lit by Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and other dignitaries on January 27. The lantern floats and giant-size theme lanterns are currently on display at the temple grounds.
In an effort to conserve energy, the lantern exhibition at Cihui Temple also featured a tunnel of LED energy-saving lights. Though these illuminated bulbs use less electricity, they are as bright as other light sources in brightening the venue.
Mayor Hau pointed out that in addition to being a center for spiritual activities for the devoted, the authorities of Cihui Temple are also active in organizing charity events and helping disadvantaged segments of the society. He praised the temple for playing an important role in its charity work and services to society.
The mayor remarked that the temple also makes an effort to promote traditional arts and crafts. Every year, it holds events for traditional arts and performances. These activities not only help retain some cultural practices, but it also stimulates interest among visitors.
This year, there will be six major theme lanterns at the venue. These sections feature themes ranging from Chinese folklore figures to Disney characters. The lantern exhibition will be opened to the general public from Chinese New Year’s Eve (February 6) until February 26.
