The 2007 Taiwan Coffee Festival (台灣咖啡節) is being held in Gukeng Township, Yunlin County (雲林縣政府古坑鄉), with various coffee-related activities and entertainment programs. The annual festival, now in its fifth year, runs for three weeks from 13 October to 4 November.
The event, sponsored by the Yunlin County Government (雲林縣政府) and organized by the Gukeng Township administration, is intended to promote and market Gukeng's chief agricultural product -- coffee. Farmers in Gukeng have been growing coffee for more than three centuries, but few people are aware of Taiwanese coffee, as most of the beans are exported.
In recent years, as a result of changing lifestyles, coffee drinking has become more popular in Taiwan, and in 2003, the Gukeng Township head saw an opportunity to revive the local economy and launched the annual coffee festival.
Main events in the 2007 festival include an evaluation of locally produced coffee beans by international experts, a demonstration by baristi and culinary school students to produce their best free pour art, a coffee bean roasting contest and a weekend coffee bean market.
On weekends during the festival, visitors are entertained with live music performances while they sip a cup of genuine Taiwanese coffee in one of Gukeng's coffee shops.
There are also two exhibitions, allowing visitors to view and buy local agricultural products and handicrafts made by prison inmates.
A group wedding will take place along Gukeng's two-kilometer "green tunnel" 27 October to wed 150 couples from Yunlin County.
