Having traveled from Taiwan to Spain to the UK, where he is currently a resident artist, Tang Jo-hung (黨若洪) explores themes of dream and memory in his 2007 Art Carnival with bold brushworks and Chinese calligraphy techniques. Many of the paintings feature his dog Cookey, a figure that has constantly appeared in his body of works.
In his previous works, Tang Jo-hung has employed a variety of light brushing techniques on man-made particle boards. The attributes of particle boards are suited for the uninhibited painting of fluid lines which produce fundamentally different effects from lines rendered on canvas.
In his new series, Tang’s sojourn abroad has inspired him to draw on techniques used in Chinese calligraphy to paint Cookey and his new friends, using darker colors and shades to convey feelings of nostalgia in place of the vivid colors of happiness.
Elaborating on his concept of fusing the worlds of dream and memory, Tang says, “I depict them with a huge still vase, legs and feet from nowhere, a camel, my dog Cookey with peach twigs on his head, a still skull under the vault in the dark desert, diamond pattern, a black bird, a sleeper, or a contemplating smoker. The atmosphere is motionless and mysterious, like a silent glide into the depth of the night.”
