The birth of the National Museum of Taiwan History can be traced back to 1992, when the former President Lee Teng-Hui visited the Taiwan Provincial Museum. President Lee instructed the Provincial Government to begin the preparatory work for the establishment of the ‘Provincial History Museum’. The instruction was later ratified by the Executive Yuan in 1998.? After the sidelining of the Taiwan Provincial Government, the preparatory works was handed over to the Central Government. ?The ‘Preparatory Office for the National Museum of Taiwan History’ was established in 1999 by the Council for Cultural Affairs. The official administrative body of the ‘National Museum of Taiwan History’ was formally created on March 15th in 2007.
The construction of the Museum’s Administrative and Collection Building began at the end of 2003, was completed on February 8th 2007, and began functioning on May 11th 2007. The construction of the Exhibition and Education Building also began in 2005, and is expected to finish in 2009. The Museum will be open to the public once the premise is approved and tested.
